Jury Statement:
Against the backdrop of a world marked by climate change, social segregation, and biopolitical control, Anne-Marie Reuter’s dystopian novel M for Amnesia tells the story of Millie and Melissa, two women exploring their identity and the inexplicable bond they share. With scientific hubris pushing the boundaries of (post-)human optimisation by experimenting with the body and mind, both women need to ask themselves to what extent they can trust their memory.
M for Amnesia impresses with the relevance of its topics. Not only does the novel confront its readers with various political, ecological, and social issues, but it also points out the ethical dilemmas faced by humanity. Reuter’s pared-down, almost clinical style skilfully renders the controlling and science-centred environment the protagonists live in.
The lack of coherence that Millie and Melissa perceive in their past is reflected in a fragmented and deliberately elliptical plot. The novel explores new forms of narrating the unnarratable, giving shape to the diffuse, and grasping the unreliable, by emphasising the fundamental role of language in defining the self.
